The week before Brett left for BOLC we took a trip to Rutlidge-Wilson Farm so the kids could enjoy the animals and play on one of the most exciting playgrounds in town! It was a chilly, rainy day but we managed to fit in a great trip right up until the skies opened up on us.
It was jeans weather but pairing it with my clogs and a cropped vintage jacket kept things feeling pulled together. The jacket was part of a Jackie O type suit that I found for $1. It was a great deal and love that I can wear them as separates!
I'm wearing: Vintage cropped jacket, thrifted. Blouse, Target. Wide leg jeans, thrifted. Clogs, c/o Lotta of Stockholm. Bag, Urban Outfitters.
Ruby loved the chickens and Sebastian loved the tractors. We got to see pigs, sheep, turkeys, some stray cats, and MINI HORSES!
Ruby's Wearing: Pea coat, Target. Vintage smock, thrifted. Skinny jeans, Wal-Mart. Mocassins, c/o Freshly Picked.
Sebastian's Wearing: Flannel, Target. Jeans, Old Navy. Shoes, Target.
Brett's Wearing: Vintage flannel, thrifted. Jeans, Target. Shoes, Zappos.
Ruby found a friend in this chicken. They were matching in their black and white. Total BFF's.
Here are some lovely vintage options for cold weather days for the littles: GORGEOUS, fun, simple, nautical, farm boy, military inspired, leather, and for rainy days.
Be sure to check out Rubyellen's crew soon to see how they've styled things this week! They don't get the same kind of frigid weather in Southern California but I know it's gotten a bit chilly down there lately!
Thanks for stopping in and reading about our adventures. Rubyellen and I are always hoping this feature encourages other mamas to find ways to experiment with vintage in their wardrobes. Fashion isn't the most important thing in our worlds but we both believe there's value in giving attention to our wardrobes because it makes us feel better. It doesn't hurt that our husband's love it!
As young mother's that spend a lot of time at home it's been tempting for both of us to let our style take a back seat to new priorities but VH,VT has been a fun way to share outfits with each other and our readers. We don't wear vintage every day and surely still have our yoga pants moments but we're taking strides to enjoy our wardrobes lest we slip into the dark abyss of mom jeans and husband's t-shirts. Ha! Been there, done that. It wasn't pretty.
Does getting dressed feel fun to you or more like a chore? Do you love your personal style right now or are you still trying to figure it out? Do you bargain shop for your wardrobe or invest in key pieces that last for more than a year? I'd love to hear about it!
xo,
Rachel

Wow, Rachel! I've been following you for a few months, and this is definitely my favorite VHVT so far! I love vintage, but right now my wardrobe is half Old Navy clearance rack and half (gulp) WALMART! So sad!
I love this outfit, though, because it would be a great transitional sort of thing for those of us that are looking to ease into a new style and add some vintage pieces without shocking the socks off our friends and families!
I'll definitely start paying more attention to thrift store women's suits from now on! Who would have thought?! That jacket is gorgeous!

Oh, I love vintage! (You can find some post about it on my site. And I have still some vintage clothes to show... Soon.)
And I looove all your outfits - especially the combination of your vintage jacket and this beautiful green blouse,Ruby's mocassins and coat and the boys flannel shirts!

Hmm. Mother guilt. If I buy this for myself, well... wouldn't I be better off buying something cute for the kids? That's my major problem. Coupled with the fact that I can rarely TRY anything on anymore... without dragging three kids under five into the cubicle. Doesn't happen. So I thrift a lot. No guilt, and no dramas if it doesn't fit!
Style. I do vaguely remember hearing that word once. Now things have to be beautiful (two girls). I like to think that even when my clothes don't excite me my jewellery will do the trick. I LOVE big wooden beads. Thanks for asking...
Happy styling to you and your gorgeous family, grace

Ee! I love Ruby and those chickens! When I was a wee girl it was my job to look after the chickens (with help of course) but they are the best!
I love your fashionable family! So cute! :)

Ruby's little Minnetonka's are too cute.
I love your jacket with that blouse. Is that at Target right now or from an older collection? I love it and really want to add it to my wardrobe.

I really love this outfit and could see myself wearing it comfortably. As for the getting dressed, I am 1 week post delivery and really have no desire to get dressed! Alas, I saw myself in the mirror today, and am going to at least change out of the yoga pants and run a straight iron through my hair :)

I love your outfit! I'm always looking for ways to pair vintage with jeans. I am a lover of jeans. Also, I totally snatched up that first AMAZING toddler coat you posted. My little girl is gonna love it! (Actually, I will love it for her. She's only one. Haha.)

You have such an adorable daughter! I love your outfits, your style is so cute! And affordable! I love thrifting and filling my apartment with vintage goodies & handmade items. Wish there were cooler people like you in NH! I can't get over how stinkin cute Ruby's little moccasins are awwww

you all look just great, esp the kids

Rachel, I really agree with you - taking time to put something together that you really like makes a WORLD of difference in how I feel throughout the day. I used to "save" cute items to wear on special occasions but now I treat every day I leave the house as a special occasion. I really don't buy investment pieces but I would love to start!

i love this outfit! and i love the farm too. :) i could totally see myself wearing this outfit, and i love your hair, mine is similar.
i am still trying to figure out my style, mostly bohemian, and some newer simplier pieces. i just this past year have gotten into thrifting for home goods and decor, and have visited a few clothing stores, but often times i'm a bit too big for their stuff. i joined a gym this week, and am hoping that this lifestyle change i am journeying on will allow me to work my wardrobe more to my true self. (fun, funky and romantic). :)
i always enjoy your blog, and i think this is the first time i've commented. keep up the inspired posts. :)
thanks,
barb

I am an avid goodwill and thrift shopper because our budget can only handle that at the moment and I have found some GREAT top label stuff! I do shop on the "cheapy" side, but, I try to find pieces that will last...the best of both worlds! Keep on keeping on, girl. You encourage us ladies more than you know :)

One of my favorites!! You guys look great (and I'm totally in love with you hair). :) Once, just after I became a mother, an older mom friend of mine told me that putting effort into your appearance is not only good for helping you feel better, but it also shows your kids (and husband) that you value and love the job of being a stay at home mom. I never thought about it that way, but if I were working for a company at an office job, I would definitely put effort into it. (although mom days do require a good amount of lounge-wear right?) :)

Love this look. Since you posted the new pic of you in the sidebar I've thought it was a navy cardigan, but Jackie O jacket is WAY better. I've started a major overhaul of my closet which has mostly consisted of me buying skirts at thrift stores. I just can't pass up vintage wool pleated skirts that are only $5! (This one is my current favoirte http://pinksuedeshoe.com/2011/11/14/vintage-plaid-and-leather/) If I can find a good quality piece of clothing at a thrift store I will buy it. But I've also been buying Levi's at Walmart, so whatever. As long as it fits well and looks cute I don't much care where it came from or how much it costs. I love your outfit posts, they've been a huge source of inspiration for me to not wear jeans + white tshirt every day of my life. :)

i'm currently trying to do a little make over with my wardrobe and apartment. donating old things from my early college days that i am never going to wear again and thrifting for more sophisticated but still spunky pieces. i just found a kelly green blazer that i couldn't be more excited about! :) ps ruby is seriously the most adorable little girl ever.

love all of Ruby's little vintage dresses in your posts. I have been wearing jeans with some vintage a lot lately as we are in that changeable cold in the morning, hot by midday weather here.. Over at our place there is usually some vintage going on most days for all of us, you can check out what we wore last week here

it's so true how clothes can change the way you feel and taking the small effort can make you feel so much better. It can be a chore some days but it's worth it to feel good when a random vistor drops by.

I think Ruby and Sebastian are the cutest ever! So styling'. ;)
Also, I flipped out when I read that Brett's shoes are from Zappos. My husband and I work there! :)
