I think our best family outings are the spontaneous ones. After trying out a new shrimp taco recipe in honor of Cinco de Mayo (Instagram made me do it), I had a craving for some iced coffee (again blaming it on Instagram) so I had Brett help me brew some decaf and then got the brilliant idea to use our new thrifted thermos, put the kids in their pajamas, and head up the mountain to have a Super Moon picnic. As you do.
I'm so thankful for a husband who is not only up for every last minute idea I get but also makes it extra fun in only ways dads can. We threw some blankets in the Volvo and headed up the mountain to the North Pole parking lot (a Colorado Springs attraction I last visited when I was five) where we parked ourselves until we got too cold.
Sebastian counted all the stars he could see (it was kind of cloudy), Ruby was worried about monsters, and Brett shared his own super moon. Ha! He told them stories from when they were little(r) and threatened to leave Sebastian out there for the bears when S decided he was too tired to get back in the car.
On the way home we stopped in one of the only Dunkin' Donuts around to celebrate seeing the Super Moon and didn't even feel bad about it.
This one fell asleep before we got home.
Did you get to see the Super Moon? Was it cloudy? I watched the movie Melancholia today while I ironed a million little dresses and it freaked me out a bit more than usual at the end since we'd just been moon gazing the night before!
