Project number two for this year took about five minutes and cost me nothing and Ruby ended up with a darling new (to her) hat. I made about fifty pom-poms for a Christmas garland and to add to our mantle but I still had a bit of pom-pom fever with the start of 2013. I bought this hat from Target about two months ago without trying it on and apparently I have a large head so it sat untouched in the hat pile. I finally realized all it needed was a few folds and a big pom-pom to make a sweet new hat for Ruby.
I bought a Clover pack of pom-pom makers at Michael's last fall with a coupon and they've proven to be my favorite new tool. They make perfect pom-poms each time and even Sebastian loves to use it when he's not using them as ninja stars. I have a larger one but it's hiding in some random corner of the house by now so I used my smaller one. If you don't have a tool like this or aren't interested in buying one you can always use the cardboard method. Rubyellen and I made these projects on the same day and then realized on Instagram that we were drinking the same water. She used the cardboard method and was able to customize the size of their poms which look so sweet on all three of them!
Once I was done with my pom-pom I used a crochet needle to string the long ends through and tied a knot on the inside. Then I folded the bottom up twice and secured it in the back with some yarn to keep it from rolling down over her eyes. If we don't lost it I can see this hat getting plenty of wear in the next few years and I love that it's a color I may not have found in any children's sections.
Two projects down, thirty-eight to go. A week of laying around trying to feel better gave me plenty of time to browse Pinterest and dream about our backyard plans for the spring. I'm itching to build something again although I think I'm going to wait until it hits above freezing outside to break out my saw and drill.
