Introducing our new pup, Turtle, Maisy, Dog, Sunday!
Brett and I had been seriously talking about adding a dog to our family of four earlier this year but after the first serious opportunity to adopt a rescue didn't work out we put the idea on hold. Brett wanted a Weimaraner badly. I didn't. Weims tend to need to be around their people more than other breeds, so we've heard, and despite being a work-at-home mom I wasn't excited about a dog with separation anxiety.
Fast forward a few months to Brett spotting the 50th (I kid) posting on Craigslist mentioning Weims. These were a Weim/Lab mix and free to a forever home. Free? Okay, I'm listening...a mix? Sounding better. Brett e-mailed the guy and heard nothing for about a week. He e-mailed again asking if they were still there and heard back yesterday morning. That afternoon the boys went to Petsmart to get a collar and leash and as soon as Ruby woke up from her nap we were in the car headed 90 minutes down the road to meet the litter.
We knew this would be a big dog so we decided to get the smallest female they had. There was a beautiful male chocolate pup with those haunting Weim eyes that almost changed my mind, though. Apparently, the owners were planning to breed the mama lab with a neighbor lab but the Weim got his game on first. They couldn't afford to keep them but didn't want to pass them out in a Wal-Mart parking lot where people might pick one up on a whim and then dump them when they were done.
We laid a towel down in the back seat between the kids for her to sit on the ride home. I couldn't help but laugh when the dog was being quiet and still and Ruby was chewing on her own shoe.
Sebastian picked the name Turtle before we even saw the puppies and we went with it as good parents do when a kid has his heart set on something. Later he decided to name her Betsy (our neighbors' dog's name) but that was explained away. Then he wanted to name her nothing and just call her dog. We told him she was too special to be a simple noun.
Brett and I went through a list of popular dog names online and thought about Maisy for awhile but then I was getting ready for bed and rehashing the day's events when it dawned on me how we had started the day without even a notion of getting a dog and now we had a sleepy puppy on our hands. It seemed fitting to name her after the day on which we got her. Sunday.
Ruby has already taste tested the dog food and treats, hopped in the bathtub with her, and shown her a book. She carries the dog's ball around like it's her own new toy and loves to kiss her on the nose when she's napping. Sebastian lets Sunday crawl all over him with her big puppy paws and lick his cheeks. He has told us more than once how happy he is to finally have a dog!
We're all pretty happy. Welcome home, Sunday! We've been waiting on you for a long, long time.
xoxo,
Rachel
