This maxi wrap skirt has got to be one of the quickest sewing projects I've ever finished! I bought this fabric at my friend, Roxanne's, garage sale about a month ago and set it aside knowing someday it'd be put to good use. After seeing so many beautiful maxi skirts on fashion blogs and Pinterest I decided I needed to make one myself. In fact, if my sewing machine gets fixed soon I'll happily share a tutorial to make your own. In the meantime you can find one here, here, and in our Home Ec e-course.
It's light and flowy and easy to wear. It takes a lot of fabric but would work well in a solid (cheaper). I'm thinking a linen-like fabric or even a light denim should be next on my list.
Outfit Details: T-shirt, Target. Maxi skirt, handmade from vintage fabric. Gypsy platforms c/o Blowfish. Sand Timer Necklace c/o Unexpected Expectancy. Leather bag, thrifted. Vintage glasses, thrifted.
I love the extra inches these Gypsy platforms give me. At 5' 4" (barely), I need all the boost I can get when going with a maxi. They're also the most comfortable pair of shoes I currently own!
This skirt makes the fifth article of handmade clothing I've added to my wardrobe this year including the two tops I made last week. I'm hooked!
What summer trend would you make yourself if you could?
-Rachel

Be careful, maxi skirts are addictive {& yours is particularly adorable}! There is something about 'em-- casual, comfortable, but retro classy at the same time-- I know I'm hooked~*

Such a sweet skirt Rachel! I am itching to take that home-ec course & will be signing up as soon as my sewing machine is out of storage. I need some long skirts for summer to break up the monotony of vintage knee-length skirts in my closet.

I just want to comment on how much I love your blog.
I read all the Red Velvet blogs (Elsie, Katie, Kinsey, Emma) and yours is so much more....real. The photos you take aren't fakey - when you post photos of you and your husband, you aren't trying so hard to be so posey and cute. Those girls try so hard and it shows. They are so focused on how they look, that their photos come across so contrived.
But your blog feels so real. You're not always wearing new Modcloth dresses. You don't have 5 pairs of Swedish Hasbeens. Your are so thrifty and unique. And you are honest about how life isn't so picture perfect. I LOVE that. You are so honest, and that feels so much more real. Keep doing what you are doing. You are an amazing, beautiful, and an incredible person! And I bet you're an even more amazing momma :)

Eloise,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. While I'm glad you appreciate some of the aspects that make up our family life/priorities/blog theme, I do want to offer some perspective on behalf of some of my best friends. My blog isn't primarily a fashion blog but I do have some outfit posts while a few of my friends are more fashion focused. Knowing them very well I can assure you this doesn't sum up their lives' focus and they are some of the most generous, creative, evolved people I know. I think it may be easy to compare and relate more to one or the other and I guarantee other readers probably think my blog is lacking in other areas. I think there are all kinds of ways to portray a look or feeling and that a lot of times some of the most exciting photos are the ones that had some thought put into them.
All of that to say, I do appreciate where you're coming from and enjoyed that you relate so much to my style of blogging but also wanted to bring a little more perspective about the rest of the Red Velvet girls. Thanks for sharing your opinion and for the kind things you said about me.

you look stunning, the skirt is my idea of skirt perfection, the print and length. hope to see a tutorial for it soon! Do you think a vintage bed sheet would be enough fabric? (and perhaps lined or with a slip?)

It's gorgeous, Rachel. Great fabric! And I was wondering about those shoes. I've had my eye on them for awhile so I was glad to hear they're comfortable. I'm always nervous about getting tall shoes and "standing out" a little! Do you feel "too tall" in them? You know what I mean?

Cute!! I've always been afraid to do top/bottom with different patterns, but I really like this! I really love the shoes too!!
